One of the most common concerns I hear from women—especially cyclists and endurance athletes—is:
“I want to get stronger, but I don’t want to get bulky.”
This is a really common misconception. Many women avoid resistance training because they believe lifting heavier weights will automatically lead to large increases in muscle size.
The reality is very different.
For most women, strength training builds strength, power, resilience, and athletic performance without creating a bulky physique. In fact, resistance training is one of the most effective ways to improve performance, protect your joints, and support healthy ageing.
Why Women Don’t Typically Build Large Muscle Mass From Strength Training
Building significant muscle size (hypertrophy) requires a specific combination of genetics, training volume, nutrition, hormones, and time.
While women can absolutely build muscle and become stronger, the physiological environment is different compared with men.
Here’s why.
1. Women Have Lower Testosterone Levels
Testosterone is one of the main hormones involved in muscle growth.
Men typically produce significantly higher levels of testosterone than women, which gives them a greater biological advantage when it comes to building large amounts of muscle mass.
Women can still increase muscle strength and size through resistance training, but the rate and overall potential for large muscle growth are naturally more limited.

This means that even when women follow a similar strength programme to men, the visual changes are usually different.
The result is often a stronger, more athletic appearance rather than significant bulk.
3. Women Often Have Greater Lower-Body Muscle Development
Women naturally tend to carry a higher proportion of their muscle mass in the:
- Glutes
- Hips
- Thighs
- Lower body
This is actually a huge advantage for many sports.
For cyclists, runners, and HYROX athletes, stronger lower-body muscles can improve:
- Power production
- Sprint ability
- Climbing strength
- Running efficiency
- Exercise capacity
Building stronger legs does not mean becoming bulky—it means creating a more capable, resilient body.
4. Oestrogen Influences Body Composition
Oestrogen plays an important role in female physiology and influences how women store fat and build muscle.
Higher oestrogen levels are associated with:
- Greater subcutaneous fat storage
- Different patterns of body composition
- A naturally softer appearance around muscle tissue
This means that even when women become stronger and build muscle, the visual result is often different from the highly muscular appearance many people associate with male bodybuilding.
5. Genetics and Nervous System Differences Matter
Strength isn’t just about muscle size.
A large part of strength improvement comes from the nervous system learning to:
- Recruit muscles more effectively
- Coordinate movement
- Produce force efficiently
Men and women also differ genetically and neurologically in how muscle growth and strength adaptations occur.
This is why two people following the same training programme can experience very different outcomes.

The body spends hours in a relatively fixed position, performing the same movement pattern thousands of times.
