Why I Started Velo Core

Velo Core was born out of my passion for both cycling and Pilates, and the realization that many cyclists neglect off-the-bike training—something I’ve found to be essential in my own journey. As a dedicated cyclist, I’ve always experienced the benefits of incorporating strength training and Pilates into my routine. It has helped me maintain muscle balance, improve flexibility, and enhance overall performance while significantly reducing my risk of injury. However, I’ve noticed that many cyclists tend to focus solely on riding, often overlooking the importance of structured strength and mobility work.

My background in Pilates has given me a deep understanding of how the body moves and functions, and I’ve seen firsthand how off-the-bike training can transform the way cyclists ride. Many cyclists struggle with muscle imbalances, tightness, and even issues like lower back pain, knee discomfort, or general stiffness—all of which can be improved with the right kind of training. Cycling is a highly repetitive movement pattern, and without proper strength and mobility work, it can lead to weaknesses and imbalances over time. This is where Velo Core comes in.

I developed Velo Core as a way to bring structured, cycling-specific strength and conditioning to those who love riding as much as I do. My goal is to help cyclists not only ride stronger but also stay healthier and more resilient in the long run. Through a carefully designed combination of Pilates-based exercises, strength training, and flexibility work, Velo Core helps cyclists develop a balanced body that can handle the demands of long hours in the saddle.

Why this is important?

One of the most important aspects of off-the-bike training is its role in injury prevention. I’ve seen so many cyclists struggle with recurring pain or injuries that could have been avoided with proper muscle activation, core strength, and mobility work. By integrating these elements into a training routine, riders can address weak points, enhance their stability, and build the kind of strength that translates directly to better performance on the bike.

Another key reason I started Velo Core is the importance of bone density. Cycling is a low-impact sport, which means that without weight-bearing exercises, cyclists may be at risk of reduced bone density over time. Strength training plays a critical role in counteracting this, helping to maintain strong bones and overall health. This is an often-overlooked aspect of cycling fitness, but one that I am passionate about incorporating into Velo Core’s approach.

Ultimately, Velo Core is about more than just fitness—it’s about longevity in the sport and making sure cyclists can continue riding pain-free for years to come. Whether you’re a casual weekend rider or a competitive cyclist, adding off-the-bike training to your routine can make a huge difference in your performance, comfort, and overall well-being.

I created Velo Core because I wanted to share what has worked for me with others in the cycling community. I know firsthand how much strength training and Pilates can improve not just cycling performance but overall movement, strength, and resilience. My mission with Velo Core is to help fellow cyclists ride stronger, prevent injuries, and feel better both on and off the bike.

If you're looking to build strength, improve flexibility, and create better balance in your body, Velo Core is here to help. Let’s ride strong—on and off the bike!

Velo Core Performance’s mission is to empower cyclists to ride further, faster, and for longer by combining evidence-based mobility and strength training with expert insight into the “why” behind every exercise, fostering lifelong cycling performance and healthy habits.

Mission Purpose

Velo Core Performance was created by lifelong cyclist and instructor Hannah Griffiths, whose expertise in Pilates, corrective exercise, and cross-country mountain biking informs every aspect of the program. The goal is not just to provide cyclists with the right exercises, but to ensure they understand how each movement enhances performance and reduces injury risk.

Educational Approach

Unlike conventional training apps, Velo Core Performance goes further by explaining the reasoning behind every exercise, empowering cyclists with knowledge so healthy habits can be formed and maintained. Hannah’s unique approach helps cyclists integrate mat-based mobility and strength routines into weekly training, making each session purposeful and effective.
